Miles K. Tashima, MD Memorial Scholarship

History:  REASON FOR THE GIFT
Karen Tashima established this fund in honor of her husband, Miles, to provide scholarships at the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa John A. Burns School of Medicine (“JABSOM”) to medical students who graduated from a high school on the Big Island of Hawai‘i.
ABOUT THE HONOREE
Miles K. Tashima was born and raised in Hilo, Hawai‘i. He was a product of Hilo public schools and a member of the 4-H club. After graduating from Hilo High, Miles pursued and earned a BA degree in Molecular Biology at the University of California Berkeley. Then he returned to Hawai‘i to continue medical studies at JABSOM.
Miles initially chose a general surgery residency and interned at St. Mary’s Hospital in San Francisco; later he switched to urology, training at the University of California San Francisco and the University of Minnesota. He returned to California to join the Kaiser Permanente Medical Group. For 15 years, Dr. Tashima practiced urology in Walnut Creek.
Miles was an avid fly fisherman and outdoorsman. He participated in Boy Scouts and became an assistant scout master. His knowledge of first aid, love of nature, and patience in teaching, touched many of his colleagues, friends and children. He felt that his upbringing on the Big Island greatly influenced him and the person he had become.
