William J. Mullahey Scholarship Fund

History:  William Justin Mullahey was the "Mr. Pacific" of his era, a Hawaii boy who spent 37 years with Pam Am, spanning the days from the Clippers to the Stratocruisers to the jumbo jets. A great swimmer and one-time "beach boy," Bill was as much at home in the ocean as on the shore. When World War II erupted, Bill was the South Pacific operational superintendent, based in Auckland, and immediately worked out plans to successfully evacuate all his staffers from the region.

After the war he became Pan Am's director for Hawaii and the Central/South Pacific. He helped found the Pacific Area Travel Association and revitalized the Hawaii Visitors Bureau. He served as an adviser for tourism to the governments of Indonesia, Thailand, Guam, Micronesia, Fiji, New Caledonia, and New Guinea. He was a driving force in tourism, which he saw as a path to making the 21st century a Pacific century.

In 1972 he retired to Waimea on the Big Island of Hawaii, then to Carmel, where he died on April 14, 1981, survived by his devoted wife Bobbie, three sons and eight grandchildren. Bill Mullahey was a man of large heart and great vision, warm, caring and giving. His impact for good was farther-reaching than any could know. The rich memory of his constructive life is perpetuated in the scholarship honoring him at the School of Travel Industry Management at the University of Hawaii at Manoa.
