James Richard ("Dick") Bunker "Hope" Endowed Scholarship

History:  James R. (“Dick”) Bunker, grew up in Texas and was involved in the Boy Scout of America movement earning the Eagle Scout medal. He became an executive of the YMCA and later he served for eight years at the Boys Scout of America in Texas and also at the national level. As a Naval Officer in World War II, he was involved in the liberation of the Philippines. Dick earned his baccalaureate degree from Rice College and attended graduate school at the University of Texas, Austin.

Dick came to Hawai‘i in 1959, the start of statehood. An avid sailor, Dick has been a member of the Waikiki Yacht Club for over 50 years. Through his kind efforts and love for the human race, he used his 47 ft. Ketch, "the Kalani", to help build a network of good and loyal friends. Most of his professional career was with the American Cancer Society. He helped start the American Cancer Society in Arizona, Hawai‘i, Guam and American Samoa. As executive director of the American Cancer Society of Hawai‘i, Dick helped raise funds for the organization to assist those stricken by the disease. Dick’s ability to raise money for this cause was exceptional and the American Cancer Society recognized him for his skills and leadership. Today, cancer is seen as a manageable illness, where the horizon is bright due to the efforts of many like Dick Bunker and the advances made possible via modern medicine.

Long after he retired from the American Cancer Society, Hawai‘i chapter, Dick remained active on its board and continued to assist in fundraising. Dick Bunker’s entire life is about sharing and giving. It is his desire to impart these core values to the next generation.
