Harriet Bouslog Labor Scholarship Fund

History:  The Harriet Bouslog Labor Scholarship Fund was established by Harriet Bouslog in 1989 in order to honor her relationship with the International Longshore and Warehouse Union Local 142 which gave her and her husband Stephen T. Sawyer’s professional lives meaning by connecting them to Hawai'i’s working men and women.

From 1946 to 1978, Harriet served as the ILWU Local 142’s General Counsel and was involved in mounting the legal defense of working men and women and others who had no advocate in seeking social and workplace justice. During that time she worked tirelessly to free imprisoned sugar, pineapple and dockworkers who were seeking a living wage. She championed their rights of free speech, she successfully worked to end capital punishment in Hawai'i and aided Hawai‘i’s working people in changing Hawai‘i from a feudal state run by the Big Five to a state that recognizes and honors the rights of its citizens.

To honor the accomplishment of her clients, the working men and women of Hawai‘i, Harriet and Stephen earmarked their wealth to assisting the family members of ILWU Local 142 members in sending their children and grandchildren to the University of Hawai‘i with the profound hope that they would continue to live and thrive in Hawai‘i and make Hawai‘i a better place to live for all. To accomplish this goal they believed that the students must also contribute financially or otherwise to the cost of attendance, or in other words, the students must have skin in the game in order to do their best. It is with all of these goals and founding principles that the Fund will be administered and operated.

It is this profound hope and Harriet Bouslog’s remarkable life of service to the people of Hawai‘i that serves as the foundation and the purpose of this Fund and the institution it supports, the University of Hawai'i.
