Dr. Haruto Okada Memorial Endowed Scholarship

History:  REASON FOR THE GIFT
The Dr. Haruto Okada Memorial Endowed Scholarship for the benefit of the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa, John A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM) has been established by Pamela R. Lum in recognition of Dr. Okada’s life and achievements serving the community of Honokaa on the island of Hawai‘i. Dr. Okada’s daughter, Esther Emiko Okada, and Pamela R. Lum were best friends for almost 40 years in Hawai‘i.

ABOUT THE HONOREE
Dr. Haruto Okada was born in Paauhau, Hawai‘i on October 10, 1904. He received his B.S. degree from the University of Illinois and his M.D. degree from the University of Illinois School of Medicine in 1928, after which he studied surgery in Japan. In 1937, Dr. Okada returned to Hawai‘i and opened his hospital and practice in Honokaa, Hawai‘i in a facility that was built as an extension of his residence.

Over the next three decades, Dr. Okada served the Hamakua area as a plantation doctor and in his private practice. He was highly regarded in the community where he specialized as an obstetrician but also served as a general practitioner. Dr. Okada was also a member of the Hamakua Lions Club. He passed away at the age of 79. Dr. Okada's wife, Harue Morioka Okada, assisted him in his hospital by carefully preparing meals for his many patients. Dr. and Mrs. Okada had one daughter, Esther Emiko Okada.

The Okada family residence and attached medical facility were bequeathed to the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo by Esther Okada.
