Cornelia F. and Roy Sakamoto Scholarship Endowment

History:  CORNELIA F. AND ROY SAKAMOTO SCHOLARSHIP ENDOWMENT

REASON FOR THE GIFT
Cornelia (Connie) F. Sakamoto attended the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa on scholarship and would not have been able to attend college without such help. She is very grateful to those who helped her and therefore is establishing this fund to support students with financial need at the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa College of Education.

ABOUT THE DONOR

Connie Sakamoto is a 1964 graduate of the University of Hawai‘i. During that time females had two options if they wanted to further their education after high school. Option 1 was to become a teacher. Option 2 was to become a nurse. As an idealist, Connie decided to do good by becoming a nurse. She later found out education as a nurse was to take place in a hospital. She decided against that since she wanted a more broad based education and went on to attend a university and become a teacher. Little did she know that during the 1960’s the University of Hawai‘i’s Education Department thought it best to wipe out Pidgin English by training their teachers to speak good English. She went through four years of taking every speech class and finally finished with an “F” on her record.

Connie wanted a broad education to develop an inquiring mind. Until she attended college her father did all of her thinking for her. Her family did not have the resources to send her to college but she was able to attend on a combination of work and scholarship money. She really appreciated the financial assistance she received and hopes to assist others (especially women) to attend the University of Hawai‘i.
