Harold T. Tanouye Scholarship
History: |
Harold T. Tanouye is a leader and innovator in the local agriculture industry and has been a valued partner in helping CTAHR develop new varieties of anthuriums, thus strengthening Hawai'i's reputation in tropical flowers and foliage. Numerous anthurium species upon which he collaborated have won awards, and Mr. Tanouye has also earned many awards personally, including the U.S. Senate Productivity Award, the State of Hawai'i Outstanding Young Farmer of the Year, the Exporter of the Year Award, and induction into the Junior Achievement Hawai'i Business Hall of Fame.
He has been a cooperator in many CTAHR field research projects, including anthurium nutrition and irrigation for increased flower production, postharvest investigations into increasing vase life of cut anthuriums, and several anthurium blight-management projects resulting in blight-control practices still used by anthurium producers today.
Mr. Tanouye has consistently consulted with CTAHR researchers, extension personnel, and administrators regarding critical issues impacting the anthurium industry, helping CTAHR to help meet the industry's needs. Mr. Tanouye's whole-hearted cooperation with CTAHR has enabled the college to pursue research in all aspects of anthurium production including cultivar development, pest and disease control, pre and post-production practices, and marketing. Through these efforts, he has kept the Hawai'i anthurium industry competitive and thriving in the global marketplace.
