Bruce C. Bigelow Memorial Fund

History:  REASON FOR THE GIFT
The members of Case Bigelow & Lombardi established this endowment fund to honor their late partner and friend, Bruce C. Bigelow, and to pay tribute to the commitment, professionalism and service he gave to Hawai‘i’s legal profession for 28 years.
ABOUT THE HONOREE
Bruce C. Bigelow was born in Celina, Ohio on March 26, 1946. He attended undergraduate school at Cornell University and graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in 1968. He then attended Yale Law School and graduated with his juris doctorate in 1972. Although Bruce had no connection to Hawai‘i, following law school he took a position as law clerk with the Honorable Samuel P. King of the United States District Court for the District of Hawai‘i. Following his clerkship with Judge King, he joined the law firm of Case, Kay & Lynch. In addition to being admitted to the Hawai‘i State Bar, Bruce was admitted to the United States Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals (1976) and the United States Supreme Court (1979).
Bruce Bigelow’s practice was primarily in the areas of bankruptcy, foreclosure, loan workouts, commercial collections, antitrust and government relations. He was an active participant in the bankruptcy bar and regularly participated as a speaker in seminars in his practice areas. Bruce was active in local and national politics. He served as counsel for the Coordinated Campaign of the Democratic Party of Hawai‘i (1992, 1994 and 1996), counsel for Mazie Hirono for Lieutenant Governor Campaign Committee (1994), attorney member of the National Lawyers Counsel of the Democratic National Committee (1992, 1994, 1996 and 1998), and was Hawai‘i counsel for the Clinton/Gore Campaign Committee in 1992 and 1996. Bruce, Hilary Rodham Clinton and President Bill Clinton attended Yale Law School at the same time. Whenever President and Mrs. Clinton visited Hawai‘i, Bruce was always here to greet them.
Bruce had a wide range of clientele. Just prior to his death in December 2000, he was local counsel for Liberty House in its successful reorganization under Chapter 11. Some of his other clients included GE Capital Hawaii, Inc., Finance Factors, Ltd., First Hawaiian Bank, the Mitsue Trust & Banking Company, Ltd., Wal-Mart, Inc. and Ala Moana Hotel.
